1. The Proof of the Priority of the Month of Muharram

In one of his lectures uploaded on the Khalid Basalamah Official YouTube channel, Ustaz Khalid Basalamah said that the main argument for the virtue of the month of Muharram is Surah At-Taubah verse 36.

The translation of At-Taubah verse 36 as quoted from Tafsirq.com is, “Surely the number of months with Allah is twelve months, in Allah’s decree when He created the heavens and the earth, of which four months are forbidden. That is the (statutory) of the straight religion, so do not mistreat yourselves in the four months, and fight the polytheists all as they also fight you all, and know that Allah is with those who fear Allah.”

Quoted from www.muslim.or.id, further explanation regarding the four months referred to in Surah At-Taubah verse 36 is Dzulqo’idah, Dzulhijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.

This is in line with the Hadith of the History of Imam Bukhori number 4406 and Imam Muslim number 1679.

The Prophet shollallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam said, “Indeed, this rotating time is like when Allah created the heavens and the earth. One year has twelve months. Among the twelve months, there are four sacred months (Shahrul Haram). Three consecutive months: Zulkaidah, Zulhijah, and Muharam, then the month of Rajab of the Mudhar tribe between Jumadilakhir and Sha’ban.”

Ustaz Khalid Basalamah also quoted Imam Qurthubi’s interpretation that Allah glorifies these four months by multiplying the rewards and multiplying the sins in these four months, including Muharram.

In fact, according to Khalid, the name Muharram was only given by Allah after the Prophet Shollallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam was appointed as a prophet.
