1. Muharram is one of the haram (noble) months

The month of Muharram is a glorified month even long before the arrival of Islam.

In this month, Allah SWT forbids humans from committing unjust deeds, immoral acts and prohibits fighting which causes bloodshed.

The glory of the month of Muharram is stated in the Al-Quran surah at-Taubah verse 36:

اِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُوْرِ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِيْ كِتٰبِ اللّٰهِ يَوْمَ خَلََ Peace be upon you وَالْاَرْضَ مِنْهَآ اَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۗ…

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months, (as) Allah decreed (in Lauh Mahfuz) when He created the heavens and the earth, among which there were four forbidden months….”

At-Tabarani in his interpretation says the four months in question are the months of Dzulqa’dah, Dzulhijjah, Muharram and Rajab.

2. Muharram is the month of Allah

Mentioned by al-Zamakhsyari from the book Faidh al-Qadir by Abd Al-Ra’uf al-Munawi, the month of Muharram is called shahrullah or the month of Allah. This is based on the lafazh jalalah “Allah” to show the glory and majesty of the month.
